Hi, mates.
i have a serial communication cable that i'm using for S7-200, can i use an ordinary USB-Serial adaptor on a laptop with no real serial port? The laptop i'm using with serial port broke.

Re: [?]: Can i use a regular USB-Serial adaptor for S7-200
Hi
Well, I have tried connecting using USB-RS232 adapter and the PPI cable from Siemens (essentially RS232-RS485 adapter) but unsuccessfully... However, I managed to program the S7-200 using the MPI adapter (w/ USB) that usually is used for programming the S7-300/400.
Regarding the USB-RS232 adapter, I can not say if in general this is not working, but as far as I remember, there was a thread in the official Siemens A&D forum that was explicitly stated that this kind of connection is not possible...
If you can afford it, then buy either the MPI adapter or the PPI adapter, both with USB connection.
Good luck

You mean you have serial ppi cable, i already successfully connected using usb to serial adaptor you just need to see on your pc which comport it is now connected then used that on setting of set pgpc interface. This is how i remember i did it, im sorry i don't have access to pcppi adaptor thats i cannot make test to state it accurately. I also forgot the brand of this adapter but this is only local brand in philippines.
Best regards,

If your question is that you have serial PPI/MPI cable (not usb version) and you want to use serial to usb adapter on pc, you can do that. I used that method.

USB <-> RS232 <-> RS485.
Install driver for FT232BM from FTDI.
Use virtual COM and select PC/PPI interface.
