ID 21105 - RSView32 Installation fails because path too long
Problem:
While attempting to install RSView the install stops and the following error message appears:
Path is too long.
or: InstallShield Engine EXE has encountered a problem...
Cause:
The Windows Path system variable is near or at 255 characters. The InstallShield program is not able to set paths greater than this length. Please note that this is only a problem during the installation. The Windows path can actually be 256 characters or greater after the installation; the problem is simply that InstallShield is not able to create a path that long.
Solution:
Shorten the Path system variable to allow RSView to install.
For Windows 2000 and Windows XP computers:
Right-click on My Computer and select Properties -> Advanced -> Environment Variables.
Under the “system variables” window, highlight the system variable: Path
Hit the EDIT button.
Highlight the whole path field in its entirety, press CTRL-C to copy the existing path to the Windows clipboard.
Open Notepad, WordPad, Word or other .text editor, and hit CTRL-V to paste
Save this path as filename "OldPath.TXT". This will be your backup so that you can safely remove the existing path.
Remove all paths except %SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem
Paste back edited path value(s) into the Path variables value field
After reinstalling RSView32, InstallShield should have added the following paths (assuming default locations): C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RDM;C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSView;C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSCommon
Run the RSView32 sample project to verify that RSView32 is working correctly.
Add additional third party application paths as needed by pasting them back from the saved file in step 6.
For Windows NT computers:
Right-click on My Computer and select Properties -> Environment.
Under the “system variables” window, highlight the system variable: Path
Click in the "Variable" field below and press Tab. This will highlight the entire "Value" field.
Press CTRL-C to copy the existing path to the Windows clipboard.
Open Notepad, WordPad, Word or other .text editor, and hit CTRL-V to paste
Save this path as filename "OldPath.TXT". This will be your backup so that you can safely remove the existing path.
Remove all paths except %SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\system32
Paste back edited path value(s) into the Path variables value field
After reinstalling RSView32, InstallShield should have added the following paths (assuming default locations): C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RDM;C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSView;C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software\RSCommon
Run the RSView32 sample project to verify that RSView32 is working correctly.
Add additional third party application paths as needed by pasting them back from the saved file in step 6.
For Windows 95 and Windows 98 computers:
These operating systems handle paths a little differently. The path is set in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file using either the PATH or SET PATH commands. There may actually be more than one of these statements, so the last command determines how the path gets set. We recommend that you make a copy of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file before you begin your edits. After making the backup, you can use the REM statement to remark out all PATH or SET PATH commands. After rebooting and reinstalling, InstallShield should have configured a path similar to the one listed above. Once again, you can copy/paste back all the previous paths.
NOTE: One way to help avoid this message in the future is to install to a shorter path. For example, instead of accepting the default locations in C:\Program Files\Rockwell Software, you can install to C:\RSI, which is much shorter and therefore less likely to encounter this problem.
